Evaluation Function Learning

There has been much work on learning feature values by experience or observation (e.g. [\protect\citenamevan Tiggelen, 1991][\protect\citenameTunstall-Pedoe, 1991][\protect\citenameCallan et al. , 1991][\protect\citenameLevinson and Snyder, 1991][\protect\citenameLee and Mahajan, 1988][\protect\citenameSamuels, 1967]). These are all examples of passive analysis [\protect\citenamePell, 1993b], and are not of use to a program until it has had significant experience with strong players.
