Kid Beyond: Beatboxer Extraordinaire

I went tonight to see my friend Andrew Chaikin, aka Kid Beyond, performing at Slims in San Francisco at a party to celebrate the launch of his debut cd, Amplivate. If you haven't heard of Kid Beyond already, you should check him out. I truly think he is one of the musical geniuses of our time (you heard it here first!).

Andrew was one of the pioneers of modern vocal percussion and a founding member of the House Jacks, who created modern full-spectrum a capella music. In the last few years, as a solo performer, he added a live loop-tape technology that enables him to layer in his own voice in bass, guitar, drums, special effects, and multiple harmonies all at the same time. The result is a musical experience than I would best describe as transcendent. Seeing Andrew perform is a great example for me of what happens when someone truly finds their voice.

Kid Beyond is on tour across the country. Details on his website. You can also sample his songs. I especially recommend the first one, Wandering Star (clicking the link will play the mp3).
